Yet Another Anti-Gay Leader is accused of being Gay. George Rekers' Rent Boy: The Ironic Hypocrisy

by Connor Davidson

I would like to start this article off in the words of Roy Zimmerman: "Ted Haggard is comp
letely heterosexual and Larry Craig is completely heterosexual and Mark Foley is completely heterosexual and Bob Allen is completely heterosexual and Jim West is completely heterosexual and George Rekers is completely heterosexual"
. Where "completely heterosexual" is used with the utmost irony.

Every single man named in Roy Zimmerman's list has at some point had their very own scandal surrounding their sexuality. Every single one of these men have fought virulently against homosexuality. But most importantly every single one of these men is a hypocrite of the highest order.

The most recent addition to the hall of hypocrisy is preacher/psychiatrist George Rekers. George Rekers was, before his resignation, the head of The National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH) which is an organization that believes homosexuality is a condition and can be cured. If the this organization was not always a joke (I've personally always seen it as one) it now is.

You may or may not have read about Dr Rekers travel companion - a well built twenty year old blond male. This man just happened to be a gay prostitute. Now, Dr Rekers insists that the reason he had this travel companion was because he had an operation that meant he could not lift his luggage (despite being photographed doing quite the opposite) and needed someone to help him. He also clams that he did a Google search for a travel assistant. This Google search, I assume, took him to a website that I won't link to (Bruce spends enough time fighting off links to certain sites) where he got this "travel assistant".

At this point I would have expected any self respecting anti-gay activist to close the tab, delete his browsing history and stick the computer on a bonfire and burn it or, alternatively, admit his mistake repeatedly emphasizing that it was a mistake. However, Dr Rekers was not put off by sexually explicit material (I know this because there was blurred screenshot on MSNBC with Rachel Maddow) and simply proceeded to order his assistant.

Of course we cannot say for certain that anything sexual happened between the two. Though the "travel assistant" in question did say he gave Dr Rekers daily massages which is not entirely sexual. We can however make two obvious conclusions:

1) Someone so opposed to homosexuality is endorsing it - by paying a company which clearly supports homosexuality
2) George Rekers is clearly clever in one respect (he has a Ph.D) but clearly cannot defend himself aptly

It does seem on the surface probable that something sexual happened but it would too far to conclude anything for definite. This however does not prove he is not a hypocrite - as per conclusion number one.

After all of these sexuality scandals in the anti-gay world can anyone who is themself anti-gay have any confidence in these leaders? Can anyone comprehend the hypocrisy of these men - Dr Rekers included? The degree of hypocrisy is equivalent to Richard Dawkins becoming a creationist (with no new evidence) or Barrack Obama building up an Armageddon and a half worth of nuclear missiles.

I mean it is one thing to change your mind and feel remorse about it (at one point I was opposed to gay marriage until I realised that it was just a war of words, definitions and metaphors which was all ultimately superficial) but quite another to go against everything you believe and devoted your life's work to and then deny it. To add insult to injury virulently homophobic letters by Dr Rekers were being read by every school superintendent in the country while he was away with his "travel assistant".

Dr Rekers has kicked up such a stink it quite simply Rekers.

Standard human psychology. You can almost always count on the fact that when one obsesses about anything that it is to draw attention away from their own predilection.

Thanks for reminding us yet again, but remember the ones that really care about these insane rantings are usually doing so for the same reasons that these fools are ranting to begin with!

I'm going to disagree with you in part. Yes, people are entitled to their private sexual orientation . However if, like Dr Rekers, you spend you life very much in the public eye, trying to make life miserable for homosexuals and then take part, in some way, in homosexual activity it no longer remains private. Do you realize how miserable he was trying to make life for, particularly young, homosexuals?

I completely agree Connor.  Don't make life hard for others because you have a difficulty with dealing with something in your own life.  I read a great book called "The dark side of the light chasers" one lesson I got from that book was generally the things that bother us most about people or inspires us to dislike someone are the very things we struggle with in our existence.  The realization of this can help us look inward and make our relationships and life more rewarding.  Great article and I am glad people are reading it.

I've always heard that the area we need help in is the area we usually wind up working in. Maybe some of this going on his life. Interesting article Connor.

That last line had me laughing out loud!

Seriously, someone taking such a stand should definitely take measure not to be any way associated with or seeming to approve such behavior. Still, where would we be without such craziness? Nancy Grace would be unemployed!

Absolutely brilliant. You knew exactly where to place each part of the sentence to make this one of your best articles yet. Fantastic.

I don't know much about this, Conner, but it sure seems like there is often an evangelical in the news with some sort of scandel. Maybe not so much that they are more involved, but seem to get caught. Sad, isn't it? Politician and preachers not very trusted these days.

Yes, the truth very evident "trust no man." Yes even NONE. That is why you have a brain. How sad we follow blindly without using it. Best wishes.
