How to Stop Getting as Much Spam or Unwanted Emails On Google Mail by Setting up Filters

Getting spam is very frustrating - especially if you get a lot of email, which you have to sift through and all of it seems to be spam. Or perhaps you've joined a website that sends out a newsletter every second minuet and you've decided that you've had enough, but don't want to leave the site. Or maybe you don't want to get anymore emails from someone. If you use Google Mail I can show you how you can solve these problems.

1. Firstly…
Log onto Google Mail, www.gmail.com (use the box on the right hand side of the page)

2. Open Email
Once logged onto Google Mail, click on and open any spam email that you have received.

3. More Actions
Once you have opened the email click on the "more actions" tab just above the text in the open email on the toolbar.

4. Start Filtering
Scroll down the list until you find "filter messages like these" and click on it. This will automatically open a bar at the top of your email. The address will be automatically filled in for you.

5. Filter
Press the "next" button and then select the delete it option (tick the box). This will mean that you will no longer receive any more emails from this sender again.
----
If you use this often you will see a large reduction in the number of spam emails you receive as one sender will only be able to send you one email per email address.

Tips

• This can also work in reverse, if a message from someone you trust keeps ending up in the spam folder, follow the steps changing step 5 from delete to never send to spam. This will mean that all the emails from that address will be automatically moved to the inbox without you having to think.
• Try not to give out or publish online your email address if you don't want spam.

Warnings

• This system will not stop you receiving spam completely. You will still receive spam as spammers change their email addresses and new spammers get your address.

YES! Connor - you are a wonderful help with this piece and I am PRINTING it out to do what you are suggesting - I now get more spam than "real" mail on my Yahoo account! Thanks a bunch! Marijo

I've only had one account with Yahoo so I don't know how the filters there work. Though I suspect they would be very similar.
