Fat Pets- Who's To Blame? You Dont Have Far To Look.

My Books and Articles (under construction)

I have watched many programs and read many articles that have tackled the issue of fat pets. The people they get to talk for them... They are beyond comprehension. They seem to think either that it is not their fault or that they are just "loving" their pet. Few people understand the scale of this. It is not simply a few people who fail to see the effects. it is far, far more sinister:

"Pet obesity in the UK, you could say, is at epidemic proportions. Nearly 50% of dogs and cats in this country are overweight, and 15% of these are clinically obese."

Andrew Wilson, Orchard Veterinary Center.

It is no joke: pets are dying because of heart attacks caused by fat on the heart or arteries that resemble rush hour traffic on the M40 where all the cars are fat. They are storing a medical dictionary worth of heath problems under each flabby fold!

Now back to the point, who is to blame? By elimination you can reason it is not the pet. It is not this silly fat gene rubbish people are talking about. It must be the person feeding it at fault the owner.

It should be known there is no secret to weight gain or weight loss. If you eat more than you burn you will put on weight and if you burn more than you eat you loose weight. So it is obvious that the pet is being fed too much or exercising too little or most likely both.

Once you look into the cases you find that the owner is certainly in the wrong. One case had the man say they loved their cat and could not understand why it was fat. Turns out it got the correct measure of cat food but a huge amount of treats and it was an indoor cat so it never got any exercise.

Come on now. Who else can it be? Santa?

So Mr / Mrs Owner it is your fault and you have a responsibility to do something about it.

Connor - you are right. We do indulge our pets, but it isn't safe. Our husky insists on a "walkie" every evening which is good for us, too. We don't give our dogs much off the table and we feed them a premium food that has turkey as the main ingredient. Both dogs are within their weight range...now if only their owners were!

Hi Connor, so true. My husband is guilty of over-feeding (with treats) our dogs. Since he has been working out of town, both our dogs have lost weight.

P.S. Did you mean to say "and if you burn more than you eat..."? (I read that line a couple of times, I am thinking that is what you meant.

Great article, as always! Blessings, Teresa

Great article, Paul. I've got a Catahoula (like a Blue Merle, a Louisianna cattle dog) that no matter what we do, he just gets bigger and bigger. We walk him about a mile a day through the woods so he can chase squirrels and we limit his dog food to twice a day, but he's still overweight. I guess he's just like his master!

It is good you are trying. The people I am refering to have never taken their dog for a walk in 5 or so years.

Good article, obesity is rife at present not just with pets but with people. It is the way of the world, everyone is either too busy or too lazy to do the things that need to be done to cure this sort of problem.

I have to agree. If you really love your pet you will keep them trim so they can be healthy and live a long life. Give them toys to chew on- better yet play with them or go for a walk together!

Hi Connor. It's sad, but true, and it doesn't just happen with dogs or cats. I have a friend whose husband over fed their fish. Unfortunately, she came home from work one day and found them belly up. Good Article.

Never think a fish is dead when it is upside down. It is most likely suffering a stomach problem. A fish has a stomach the size of it's eye. The full stomach causes it to float upside down. So it may be possible that the fish was not dead.

Thanks for the comment anyway. It is appreciated.
